The American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) Assembly, the world’s largest emergency medicine conference, is a can’t-miss annual event for any EM physician

The American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) Assembly, the world’s largest emergency medicine conference, is a can’t-miss annual event for any EM physician. This October, ACEP 2018 was held right in our back yard in sunny San Diego, and UC Irvine residents and faculty showed up in force! See below for some of the work presented by our UCI EM family this year:

- Drs. Mark Langdorf & Shahram Lotfipour gave the annual State of the Journal reports at the Western Journal of Emergency Medicine & Clinical Practice and Cases in Emergency Medicine Journal Section Editor and Editorial Board Meetings. The keynote speaker was Dr. David Sklar, Distinguished Professor Emeritus at the University of New Mexico and Editor-in-Chief for Academic Medicine.

- Dr. Carl Schultz presented two talks at the Mass Casualty Course:

  1. "Disaster Triage, Surge Capacity, and Ethics."
  2. "Risk of Radiation and Need for Evacuation after Fukushima."

- Dr. Megan Osborn (pictured) gave three presentations during the ACEP Scientific Assembly:

  1. "Thinking Twice About Transfusions: When TACOs and TRALIs Turn Treatment Into Tragedy"
  2. "Discharge or Disaster? Differentiating Between Harmless & Dangerous Causes of the Acute Red Eye."

- Dr. Jessica Andrusaitis, Clelia Clark, John Billimek, and Dr. Megan Osborn’s abstract was accepted to the ACEP Academic Assembly, titled: Does applicant gender have an effect on standardized letters of evaluations obtained during medical student emergency medicine rotations.

- Dr. Chris Fox gave a presentation titled: "Starting them Early: Ultrasound in Medical Education" at the ACEP Ultrasound Management Course

- Drs. Shannon Toohey, Alisa Wray, and Kevin King (UT San Antonio) taught a hands-on workshop using Camtasia software, titled: An EM Doc’s Guide to Screencasting.

- Dr. Eric McCoy participated in Drop The Mic at ACEP with a talk on Anaphylaxis – including an unexpected end: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V7vlvaWuiRk

- Dr. Gabe Sudario gave a presentation titled: "Zero Waste Emergency Medicine -- A Visual Aid for Clinical Decision Rules in Minor Head Trauma Injury Patients."

- Dr. Lauren Sylwanowicz gave a presentation titled: "In an epidemic of West Nile Virus infection, higher risk of death and disability in patients with neuroinvasive disease can be determined at emergency department presentation."

In addition to these talks, UCI EM also took part in numerous other ACEP 2018 offerings, including:

  • Speaking to many prospective residency applicants at the EMRA Residency Fair
  • UCI EM department dinner at Meze
  • Closing Ceremonies at Padres Stadium, where our new faculty Dr. Eric Abrams hit a home run!
