Located in a diverse area of Orange County, California, the UCI Emergency Medicine Administration Fellowship aims to train physicians to prepare for administration positions within emergency departments or at the hospital level in academic or community settings. 

The focus of this fellowship includes a variety of topics in Emergency Medicine Administration with optional areas of focus. EM residency graduates interested in addressing patient care from a systems perspective, becoming a researcher in ED operations, and/or pursuing departmental or hospital-wide leadership roles may consider this career path.

Fellowship training can lead to earlier opportunities to take ownership over impactful projects in an emergency department, creation of scholarship in this area, and receive direct mentorship to help cultivate your leadership and research skills.

Fellows will learn through direct mentorship, organized didactics, leadership meetings, projects, administration courses and clinical experience.   

Fellowship Objectives: 

  1. Didactic curriculum consisting of assigned readings and participation in discussions of various high-yield topics such as:  
    1. Identifying opportunities for process improvement and managing organizational change  
    2. Understanding billing and reimbursement 
    3. Identifying ways to optimize operational and financial performance  
    4. Understanding systems issues as a clinician and as an administrator  
    5. Building relationships with nursing staff and nursing leadership  
    6. Quality and Safety  
    7. Risk Management and Mitigation  
    8. Advocacy and health care policy  
    9. Staffing and resource management  
    10. Medical informatics  
    11. Project management and process improvement 
  2. Develop understanding of business models of Emergency Medicine 
  3. Be able to lead projects related to ED operational issues  
  4. Develop proficiency in monitoring key performance and quality indicators  
  5. Participate in a variety of Operational and Leadership meetings.
