Meet Dr. Gabe Sudario – focusing on medical student education

Gabe Sudario, MD

Dr. Gabriel Sudario is originally from the suburbs of the San Francisco Bay Area, where he developed interests in biology, physics, and mathematics as a high school student. He was the first in his family to attend college and graduated from UC Berkeley with a degree in Bioengineering. While he loved the science behind engineering medical devices and drug delivery systems, he wanted to have more human connection in his professional work and decided to pursue a career in medicine

While working as a research assistant at the Infant Botulism Treatment and Prevention program at the California Department of Public Health, he applied to medical school. He attended UC San Francisco for medical school, and served as a peer educator, awarded Best Contribution to an Elective for his contributions as a peer lecturer. It was at this moment that he knew that teaching, education, and mentorship would be the center of his academic medicine career. While in medical school, Dr. Sudario also discovered passion in mentorship programming for students who were first generation to college and/or under-represented in medicine. In trying to combine his passions for education, mentorship and serving the vulnerable, Dr. Sudario chose Emergency Medicine as his medical specialty.

Dr. Sudario trained at the UCSF-ZSFG Emergency Medicine Residency Program and served as Chief Resident in his fourth year of the program. He continued to hone his passions in education, being selected as the Essentials of Emergency Medicine Education Fellow for his writing contributions to Academic Life in Emergency Medicine. For his dedication to bedside teaching, he was nominated for the Teaching Excellence Award for Cherished Housestaff and was inducted to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society as Housestaff.

After completing residency, Dr. Sudario completed a two-year fellowship Multimedia Design, Education and Technology at the UC Irvine Department of Emergency Medicine and obtained a Master of Science in Education from Purdue University. During his fellowship he focused his efforts on social media education delivery and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts at the medical school and residency level.

Dr. Sudario is now an Assistant Professor in Clinical Emergency Medicine at UC Irvine and serves as the Clerkship Director for Emergency Medicine. He also serves in the UCI School of Medicine as the Summer Outreach Programs Director. In this role he designs and implements a week-long curriculum for under-represented pre-medical students that cover topics in mentorship, application preparation, health equity and medical experiences.

Outside of the hospital, Dr. Sudario prioritizes physical fitness by attending HIIT classes and playing tennis. He is an avid college football fan, and frequently travels to Berkeley with his family to watch his favorite team, the Cal Bears. When not exercising or watching his Bears, Dr. Sudario can likely be found outside spending time with his two children, cooking and delving deep into true crime documentaries.
